Since there is only limited choice of music at the moment. If I would be fully equipped, I wouldnt buy an extra DAC just because of MQA. At least you get CD-quality with your non MQA hardware. If I buy an album that costs 9,99 at amazon/ iTunes (compressed format) I have no problem to pay 15-17€/$ for the same album as lossless MQA. If I need a new DAC -not buying it because I want to have MQA but decide for it because of good reviews (prior to the firmware release that enabled MQA!!). the promoted soundqualitiy, which may not as good as proposed. MQA-I read the caveats here and elsewhere.about the licensing fees. Today a good recorded album would sound better and more natual even as mp3,because mixing at the studios is different from the 80's.

If I listen to a Popsong from the 80's, it doesnt matter if this file would have been recorded at 192khz- it would sound very unnatural as it was very common at that time to mix high Highs, low Lows and no Mids at all. Everybody knows that the soundquality YOU hear is not only determinded by the audio gear you use and the audiofile resolution but also by your room acoustics, the quality of the "mastertapes" and, of course, your personal taste. I even do not think I can hear a difference between a 96khz file and a 192khz file. I´m not the one to start a discussion about soundquality. just for those who have the same DAC and want to do some "audio-linux" (hopefully im not the only one I primarely wanted to present my setting with a yet not well implemented DAC. Im really looking forward and thanks Tim!

(the Explorer2 has three status LED that indicate MQA and bitperfect).Īfter some conversation with Tim and getting some new code for MoOde 2.6 he managed to implement the volume control by hardware!Īnd hopefully the next update of moOde will have the code inside.

So only with software volume controller at 100% it was bitperfect and MQA. Controlling the analogue hardware volume of the Meridian Explorer (that is essential for bit-perfect and, hence, MQA) was not possible. With moOde 2.6 installed I experienced the same problems that I had earlier with the other distro's. Then I came across moOde and read about Tim's very good support. Volumio did it best, but was unstable- sometimes the DAC was not recognized by the system, sometimes it was freezing. But none was capable to drive the Meridian Explorer2. I tried different images like rune-audio, max2play, volumio, etc.Įach of them had minor and major bugs, goods and bads. So the one missing piece in my setting was a bitperfect linux distro ready to drive the Meridian Explorer2. But at least the MQA file is considerably smaller in size. I dont know if a MQA 192khz audiofile sounds much better than a non MQA file at 192khz.

But if you decode those files with a MQA-capable DAC you get full advantage of the highly compressed hires files. They can be played with any audio-gear thats capable to decode these formats. MQA is a not really a new audio-codec, but a hardware controlled decoding on a new level. wilma capacitors), the apodizing filter, etc. If you dont care about MQA, the Meridian Explorer2 is still worth to be considered, because of its high quality audio components (e.g. Looking for a hires DAC I read about the quite new MQA (master quality authenticated) standard and decided to give the Meridian Explorer2 (MQA capable) a try. On my odyssey for a good sounding, yet affordable audio streaming solution I came accross the raspberry pi and its multiple linux distributions that were highly adopted for audio and multimedia streaming.
